Quarth 04-26-13 12:23 PM |
Square All Around Square All Around: Quarth For the NES/Famicom Introduction You start the game as a ship, called a "Quarth", and unknown galactic vehicle who's objective is to rocket upwards while clearing blocks. The blocks will be cleared if they are formed into complete squares or rectangles (even if there's empty space inside) The Quarth ship, however, has the ability to move left and right and add blocks to the play field in order to form squares and rectangles. The goal is to try and clear away all the blocks, without crashing the ship into the pieces! (via a border line at the bottom of the screen) The brain is your limit in this action puzzler with a new twist of game play. Graphics The graphics in this game may seem fairly bland, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Even though the graphics are somewhat simple, they are also very calm, helping you focus more on the game instead. They are also very smooth, to boot. They look clean, well done, and have nice animations. Even the border line is drawn on and off frames while being varied to look like an imaginary line at the bottom which you must avoid. There's even a guide cursor that shows where your blocks will meet up. The cursor even turns into a letter to signify which power-up is coming soon, very helpful in an action puzzler. The graphics may seem bland, but they're all put to good use. Better yet, there's no slowdown in the game, no matter how many pieces enter the fray! Especially helpful if you're timing the shots of your bullets, when you can only have four onscreen at once. Sound The sound in this game is also fairly well done. The game music is catchy and keeps you remembering about the game. The game music also gets more hyper when you get into the more faster parts of a stage, getting you hyper up and ready for the hardest part of a s... Read the rest of this Review |
Rainbow Islands 04-25-13 03:07 PM |
Rainbow Boy-Wonder Rainbow Boy-Wonder: Rainbow Islands The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 For the NES/Famicom Introduction/Story The story begins with Bubby on a search for hidden treasure around the sea, and finds a vivid land, known for it's colours by the name of Rainbow Islands. The bad news is, that the inhabitants have been kidnapped, and Bubby is the only one around to take a stand to it. So, now Bubby has to help save an entire island, as well as retrieve it's large diamonds, all while trying to collect treasure along the way. It won't be easy, though. 28 stages and 7 bosses stand in your way of treasure hunting success and heroism in this colourful adventure! Graphics For a game called "Rainbow Islands", it actually lives up to this name, and then some. The game is littered with vivid colour all around, and actually makes you feel like you're actually there. There is a wide range of graphics and sprites, even for each level's theme as well. The enemies, surprisingly, are all individually sprited. It was all an amazing experience to the eyes, and ceases to hit you with boredom. The graphics are well thought-out for this game. Sound While the game excels in graphics, it doesn't do a half-bad job with sounds either. The stage music is a little half-half, though. Stages that have their own music track actually fit the theme they portray and sound exceptionally thought-out. Otherwise, for Worlds 2, 3, and 4, they are all stuck with World 1's theme, as if the developers stopped getting lazy with music after world 4. Otherwise, the sounds are clear and cute, go with the game, and each important action has their own sound effect to let you know you achieved something. The best part is, the music can play ALONG with the sound effects FLAWLESSLY, something not seen very often in NES titles. Addictiveness When you meet a platformer that is... Binary Land 12-11-12 01:19 AM |
The Power of Two - Binary Land The Power of Two: Binary Land For the NES/Famicom Introduction/Story The game begins with two love-crossed penguins (Namely, Gurin and Malon) trapped in the universe known as "Binary Land", set forth in an endless spree of mazes. They need to meet up at each other at the top of the screen to free their heart and make their love come true! But there will be many obstacles in the way, most notably spiders, cobwebs, and other creatures. If they don't make it in time or get caught along the way, they won't be able to live forever happiness. It is up to you, the player, to guide the two alternate penguins to the one they love most; each other! It's a surprisingly underrated and underplayed game that not only looks and sounds nice, but compels you to playing more of this extraordinary action-strategy game. Game play The game play, in itself, is actually quite simple; You guide two penguins that travel in opposite left and right directions. Simple, yes. Easy, not a chance. You not only need to coordinate the two alternate-moving characters, but you also have to guide them through a maze, and clear away obstacles in your path without getting caught on either side. However, the game features a broad difficulty curve, which easily allows new players to hop into the game and at least try it, while reserving higher levels for players with immense brain power. It's fun, highly interactive, and even mixes up the game in higher levels with new enemies that have various effects to the game, like a partner-swapping bird and an un-hittable fire ball. It is also very difficult to obtain high scores, as there is always a challenge to get even the smallest amount of points in this game. It's rather addicting, for both the casual gamer and the puzzle master. Graphics For a action puz... Read the rest of this Review |
