Mega Man X

No Doubt the Greatest Mega Man Game Ever!

UPDATE: Due to rules and popular request, I have decided to eliminate the SPOILERS. Honestly, I like this 20 year-old game so much that I felt the need to explain everything this game has to offer like the fanboy I am. Then again, I should know better than to do this, and I should allow new players to discover this game for themselves. I apologize for breaking the rules and for disappointing/angering some of you. Now, on to the review!

INTRO:

Of course, I shouldn't get to reviewing games at all until I start reviewing my favorite game of all time, Mega Man X. This is, without a doubt, the greatest Mega Man game ever made for two reasons: control and level design. The control feels about the same as the already excellent classic Mega Man games, but with the addition of wall-jumping and dashing, the controls are better than ever! Also, the level design supports these features in their entirety, as they offer slopes and wall that would be impossible to traverse in the NES games. Not only those, but whatever little story there is to the game is magnified by how it is told in-game, and how the player actually feels involved in every step!

People like to say that RPGs like Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger are their favorite games ever, and while they are perfect games for their genre, they are not necessarily for everybody, especially children who don't bother to read text. Mega Man X, on the other hand, doesn't require reading to enjoy the game (except maybe the title screen) and can be enjoyed by anybody. I mean who can deny that shooting things in a cartoon-looking game is fun? Kids practically fantasize being the hero that shoots stuff, even in this day and age. And this game fulfills their fantasy perfectly. For everybody else, this is a well-designed action video game that belongs in your SNES collection right alongside Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, and Super Castlevania IV.

Castlevania - Legacy of Darkness

The Dark Age of Castlevania
When the Nintendo 64 was released and revolutionized 3D gaming for eternity, people were excited for Castlevania's transition from 2D to 3D...that is, until they actually had Castlevania on the Nintendo 64 and played it. Suffice to say, it was not very fun and made their wallets cry in regret. The controls were awkward to use before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had to tell it how to have proper 3D controls; the 3D graphics were unattractive and had dull colors even for its time; and the game, itself, was so dull and repetitive that it was only worth a rental at best.

Only a few months later, Konami decided that it messed up so badly that they needed to make a Director's Cut version of this game that tries to make up for Castlevania's mistakes. But paying $70 for the same game but different was already too much for gamers to handle, so again, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is worth only a rental, perhaps even skipping altogether even if it's free like on Vizzed.com. This time, though, you start the game as a werewolf named Cornell rather than Reinhardt or Carrie. Just imagine beating a new campaign only to unlock older campaigns from an older game, and that's Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness for you! Heck, even the environments are the same for the most part!

Graphics: At least the graphics take advantage of the Expansion Pak for a higher 640 X 480 resolution this time, so the graphics look nowhere nearly as blurry as in Castlevania. However, most of the game looks drab and dark to the point where the 2D Castlevania games look like cakewalks in the park with the Care Bears, for better or worse. I would say it's for the better at first, because at least this lends to a haunting atmosphere, but it becomes dull and tedious to look at in a hurry! It's like the artists were skeletons rather than actual human beings! A little more color and style would have been appreciated, and the drab colors could have been used... Conker's Bad Fur Day

The Grass Is Always Greener, And You Don't Really Know What You Have Until It's Gone!
The review title I've written here is the last line of monologue that the main character states in Conker's Bad Fur Day. Released at the butt-end of the Nintendo 64's life cycle, people, like the quote says, didn't really knew what they had the Nintendo 64 until it was under the shadows of the Nintendo 64. Actually, scratch that; people didn't knew they had Rareware on Nintendo gamers' sides until it started producing inferior games on the GameCube and then Xbox.

Even the rest of Conker's Bad Fur Day seems like this: it's a short game, half of it composed of cut-scenes and the other half gameplay, that is a heck of a ride the first time through, and it leaves the player begging for more. Whereas good games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 make you feel just a little fatigued from collecting things, Conker's Bad Fur Day never gets old, even as the jokes don't get funny anymore after the umpteenth playthrough--and even that is debatable--because of the sheer amount of variety in this game! One moment, you're jumping across platforms, and the next thing you know, you're rolling a ball of poo, or even fighting a pile of poo...that sings! This game never ceases to amaze almost all players (and yes, supperflipper76 with his YouTube video "Why I Hate Conker's Bad Fur Day" is completely wrong--that guy wishes he made Conker's Bad Fur Day), especially someone like me who is into video game development and taking college courses on it. It is my personal inspiration to make a game just like this--raunchy, disgusting, somewhat obnoxious, but ultimately fun despite it being a little more British than most Americans are used to, much like a good album from Cubanate--and inspire another generation of gamers, even if it is going to be a niche audience.

Actually, that is exactly what this game is: a cult classic. The game only sold 50,000 around its launch window, so with the price of $70 (and it still sells for about that high on eBay), Rareware managed to ... Read the rest of this Review
Star Fox 64

If You Don't Like This, Barrel Roll Yourself in the Trash!
This was easily the coolest Nintendo 64 game I had up until I got Banjo-Tooie! Even when I either rented games from Blockbuster or actually bought them from tech stores, I would always come back to this one like anyone would com e back to a great movie, memorizing the lines that the characters spew out ("Do a Barrel Roll!", "Hey Einstein, I'm on your side!", and "Try a somersault!" come to mind), figuring out the different paths to the final level, and even impressing my friends and family with my skills and high scores in the game (but nowhere near the 2000 mark, mind you).

This game is that good. Do yourself a favor and don't quit playing this game until you've earned every single medal in every single planet, on both difficulty levels, until you unlock the ability to play multiplayer matches on foot. This is how I imagine many children back in the late 90s played this game--over and over again, and even when they "beat" the game, they keep on playing!

Overview:
???? You are Fox McCloud, out to avenge your father's death by the hands of the evil Andross, who according to the narrator when you start the main game, "...turned this once striving system into a wasteland of near-extinction." (See what I mean about memorizing lines?) Your father, James McCloud, was part of the Star Fox team, which consisted of himself, Peppy Hare and Pigma Dengar, with the latter betraying the team in the planet of Venom for the sake of Andross.

Commencing Nostalgia Overload:

"Peppy barely escaped Venom returned home to tell Jame's son, Fox, about his father's fate. A few years have passed. Andross has again invaded the Lylat System. General Pepper has turned to a new Star Fox team, headed by Fox McCloud, to save Corneria, and free the Lylat System once again."

Whew! You might not know what I'm talking about if you've never even so much as looked at the game. (I'm looking at you, roommate, who is supposedly a "gamer"). Anyway, the main pl... Read the rest of this Review
