Stellaris

Stellaris - 4x game in space
I picked up Stellaris when I saw it was on a deal recently (75% off or something like that) and once I found out it was made by the same people who made Crusader Kings 2 (which I have played for.... 843 hours according to Steam). I'm pretty sure I'm going to be doing this exact same thing because I've been hoping to find a game like Crusader Kings 2 but space based. I really enjoy space-based games, but I find many of them are either ridiculously in depth or so basic I get bored in an hour. Stellaris seems to strike a good balance. My first time through I was able to play without getting too in depth but sort of figuring things out as I went. I did play on a relatively easy mode in order to learn the mechanics, but I like that I was able to do that without too much stress.
Graphics: I have to rate the graphics an 8 for this game. Definitely not the prettiest game I’ve ever played, but it was really nice to look at no matter what I was doing. There was enough variation in character designs, species, ships, and what not that the graphics never felt like they were getting stale. I do have one complain and it is probably my computer having the issue but the longer I played and the more ships I had involved in space battles the slower things ran. I am not surprised by this in any way because my laptop is getting kind of old and it was never very powerful to begin with. Still, I do wish it was able to handle all the space battle without slowing down like it does. My laptop is not a decade old so it should not struggle as much as it did at times. I did have the settings up fairly high the entire time so I bet I could adjust that and make things a bit smoother.

Sound: Again, the sound needs to be about an 8. It was consistently good music and audio work throughout the game, but nothing really blew me away. I did enjoy the voice for the tutorial. It was very robotic and fit with the overall esthetic of the game. The music did blend really well into the back... Read the rest of this Review
Crusader Kings II

Crusader Kings 2
Crusader Kings 2 was free on Steam this year and while I had heard of it and other games like Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis I hadn’t actually bothered to pick up any of the games. Boy am I glad I gave this game a chance. I had no idea that I would spend over 400 hours on a single game in my life and still not be bored of it or have learned everything there is to know. I’ve still only put time into western European starting groups. I haven’t delved into the pagan, Muslim or Eastern religions or political groups they start under. I’ve started as a count, duke and king and had great experiences with all of them. The challenges of starting as each one are a different kind that I wouldn’t have expected. I think the thing that has kept me hooked is the fact that this game isn’t about resources as it is about people and how they react to each other. Sure, having a big army or lots of gold is important but sometimes who your kid marries or who you have an alliance with matters even more. The level of complexity in this game is quite honestly overwhelming at first and even after playing as much as I have I still struggle with some decisions. Not everything is a cut and dry good or bad idea. Sometimes killing a rival is the best idea and sometimes it can turn your vassals against you and cause a civil war. That’s part of what I love about this game. No decision results in the same outcome as last time.

Graphics 7/10
I didn’t rate the graphics too highly because the game is from 2012 originally and I don’t think many improvements have been made since then. However, it is a nice looking game overall even if there isn’t a lot of great detail to a lot of it. I don’t look at the game and wish it looked better but am usually impressed with the detail of characters faces and the maps.

Sound 9/10
What the game lacks in graphics it makes up for with the music. I don’t always play games with the in game music going bu... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World

Super Mario All-Stars Review
This is by far one of the best value games ever in the console era in my opinion. 4 games in 1!

I'm not really going to review each game in great detail. Just a general overview as to why I love this pack of games and why I like each game individually.

Super Mario 1 - I remember playing this game when my family first got a Nintendo. So much fun! My parents tried to play and failed miserably and I remember finding the secret pipes to later levels and dying SO MANY times trying to beat the game. Classic game worth playing again. Still really difficult in the later levels if you don't skip past too much of it. I barely remember worlds 5-7.

Super Mario 2 - weirdest of the bunch but still a great game. This one had more of the unique game play in it I think. Lots more level variety and 4 different playable characters helped this game a lot. It's not my favorite game by any means but I do remember putting in plenty of time beating this one too.

Super Mario 3 - possibly the best game on the NES. Getting to play this game again with the update to the graphics was awesome. Love the variety in power-ups and the level design was challenging. I've beaten this one the most often I think. Even played it through 100% one time just to see if I could beat every level.

Super Mario: Lost Levels - holy crap is this game a challenge!!!! I honestly don't know if I ever managed to beat it. I know I've played, and died, on a LOT of the levels. Only take this one on if you are a true fan of Mario and want to suffer for a long time :P Akin to the extra star levels in Super Mario World but almost tougher because it's based on the original Mario with basically no power ups available.

Like I said already, great package of games to play. Loved playing them all as a kid on the SNES. It would have been fun to see more games ported from NES to SNES in package form but I understand why only this game got that treatment. ... Read the rest of this Review
SimCity

Sim City - Where city building got its start.
Sim City was made for the SNES and released in the early 90's and is the first really good city building game every made. There had been plenty of civilization building type games made but nothing that went down to the city level like Sim City did. Sim City was one of the first games for the SNES that I owned and I put quite a few hours into it. Like, hundreds of hours. Thankfully I learned about the cheat to give yourself a ton of money and that made the game SO much easier. Without it the game is quite difficult to manage as a small kid. Still, even without the code the game is great and lots of fun to play.

Graphics 8/10 – what can you see about a game made in 1989 and ported to the SNES that has these kinds of graphics? Are they the absolute best the SNES could do? No, but for the time they were great. I personally loved the building variety that showed up with each kind of building. It wasn’t anything like the variety the games have today but for the time it was great. Most buildings had 3 or 4 different types of building it could become and each version had 4 or 5 levels it could reach. The residential and commercial even had a special way to combine 2 buildings into 1 super huge building. These things were great to see.

The other smaller details were nice to see. Very basic traffic could be seen as well as having a moving train. The train location didn’t matter because people still got where they needed to go but it was cool to see it move around the map. I also liked some of the specialty building designs that you could earn depending on what you did. The mayor’s house growing as you progressed or the various other rewards like the Zoo or the Bank. These little extras did a good job of breaking up the monotony that the other 3 buildings types could eventually have. Not that I didn’t like the other builds but when you’ve got a screen full of residential and commercial buildings there is only so much variety there. Having th... Read the rest of this Review
Rock N' Roll Racing

Rock n' Roll Racing - racing to Rock n' Roll.... what more do you want? Missiles? Okay!
Rock n’ Roll Racing is a game for the SNES made in 1993 by then Silicon & Synapse (now known as Blizzard Entertainment). The game features 4 vehicles pitted against each other in a racing battle. And battle is the key. This game is best known for its violent racing gameplay. Each vehicle is equipped with various power-ups many which are capable of destroying the other vehicles (temporarily). The game is a fast-paced shoot em up racing game in which getting blown up is not only expected but happens regularly.

Graphics 8/10 – the graphics for this game are quite good. Each planet has its own design scheme for it. They are not overly unique in theme but are pretty well made. One of the best part of the levels though is the “3D” effect many of the tracks get. There are ups and downs as well as jumps littered all over the map which can result in you being launched out of the race area. You just respawn if this happens but you are almost always in fourth place afterwards.

Another great part of this game is the vehicle designs. The first couple are pretty basic but then they get more interesting and fun to use. Being able to constantly upgrade your vehicle to a new one as you progress through the game is lots of fun. Keeps the racing fresh because you have new options and play styles that result. Along with the vehicles are the weapons that you get to use and the graphics for those, while simple, are pretty sweet. Blowing up other vehicles does not get old and seeing someone else’s vehicle blow up as you speed by is a great feeling.

Another nice feature is the variation in race track obstacles. Things like oil spills, lava pools, snow drifts and slime pits all get in your way while trying to complete a race. These are nice planet specific obstacles to keep each race a bit unique. To offset these hazards there are speed boost arrows spread around the various tracks to give you an extra boost of speed. There are a handful of places... Read the rest of this Review
